Desert Mama- Who is Matt and where can we find you?

Matt- Hey, I’m Matt Wilkins, some may know me as Matt Sabbath.

I´m an illustrator from London, England, but now I reside in Barcelona, Spain.

D- How and when did the love for Illustrating come about?

M- Honestly as long as I can remember, drawing has been a big part of my life and it’s one of those things that my passion for has never faded.

D- Is it an innate talent or did you study art?

M- I never did study art in any form of higher education.

It’s somewhat been passed down in the family as my grandfather was an amazing pen and ink artist, my parents are both creative and my sister is also an illustrator.

I guess you could say it’s an innate talent but it definitely took me a lot of years of trial and error to get to the point I’m at now with my work.

D- What inspires you, and what other artists currently working do you admire?

M- I get really inspired by so many different areas when it comes to art. From the art Nouveau movement to 60s-70s rock posters, then onto the 80s skateboard graphics, traditional tattooing and old horror comic books.

So many artists are killing it right now! To name a few I´ve got to say Austin Maples, Boss Dog, Jaca, Maarten Donders, Hilary Jane, Jondix and Logan Maxwell Hagege.

D- Show us what you think is your best Illustration by now and tell us why you love it:
M- That’s a tough one, I think I’ve got to go with one of my Waylon Jennings designs, but this one in particular.
It’s just a huge honour to have got to work on those for such a legend and to get the approval from his family.

D- What is your work technique?

M-I try to keep as much of it analog as I can, I draw all the black linework with pen and ink on paper, then I scan that in and add the colour digitally so the design can be ready for its use, whether that’s shirts, album covers,
posters, etc.

D- The part you love most about what you do, and the worst part:

M- The part I love the most about what I do is getting to work with so many rad people on different projects, it’s always a trip when a band or a brand that I admire hits me up.

It’s connected me to a lot of like minded folks and has given me the opportunity to travel to different shows around Europe, hopefully soon the world.

The worst part, which isn’t all too bad but it’s not having any work colleagues, you have to learn to get used to spending a lot of time alone just drawing in the studio.

D- Where and how would you like to see yourself 10  from now?

M- In recent years I’ve learnt not to plan too far in the future as life can be so uncertain, I find it best to just let life happen.

All I can hope for is that I´ll still be doing the things that make me happy in life.

D- Why Barcelona?

M- I think I first travelled to Barcelona just over 10 years ago and since then visited a few times over the years, I just fell in love with the city and always told myself that I need to make this place my home someday.

To me it’s just got everything for me, the mountains for hiking, a city that isn´t huge so it’s easy to get around and of course the beach and sea on the other side.

D- Other interests apart from your work:

M- Heavy Metal, Country music, skateboarding, learning different crafts, choppers and travelling.

D- How is a perfect day in your life:

M- Something really simple, going for a hike in the mountains, then off to the beach to drink some beers, eat mexican food with friends and to go to a local gig to finish the day off.

D- A success and a failure:

M- Doing the job I love every single day.

I’d like to think that I learn from any failures or mistakes to make me a better person.
