Desert Mama- Who is Alex and where can we find her? Tell us about yourself:

Alex- Hi I’m Alex! I’m an illustrator, appreciator of old junk no one wants, enjoyer of the outdoors and I live in Eagle, Idaho 🙂

DM- How and when did the love for Illustrating come about?

A- Honestly, it didn’t come about until the end of 2016 when I got my hands on my own iPad.

I had a minor back injury for most of that year so I was just trying to take it easy and not get hurt again. I needed something to do with all of that down time, so I started drawing everyday and haven’t stopped since.

DM- Is it an innate talent or did you study art?

A- So my grandma was an artist *RIP Norma Jean Tapscott*, and watching her sculpt and paint while I grew up was always a HUGE inspiration.

I’ve always done artsy stuff, but I did go to school and study art for five years.

DM- What inspires you, and what other artist currently working do you admire?

A- I get inspired by watching monster jam, school bus racing, chopper stuff, and demo derbies. Basically cars and motorcycles inspire me.

As for artists who are kickass, I love @NastyNeckface, @kliuwong, @lukepelletier, @anthonyhicksart, @radbiker_, @mattrmccormick and way too many others!

DM- Show us what you think is your best Illustration by now and tell us why you love it:

A- This is one of my favorites just because it makes me laugh.

I got this quote from my uncle, he’s a truck driver, and has stories to tell. This is one of those quotes I remember him saying while he was driving me and my brother somewhere years ago. It’s just always stuck with me and inspired this drawing.

DM- What is your work technique?

A- Step one: Get coffee.

Step two: turn on some music.

Step three: sit down and draw. I’m mostly working digital these days.

I draw on my iPad pro using Adobe Fresco. All my work is vector based so I can easily blow it up and make prints or other products for my online shop.

DM- The part you love the most of what you do, and the worst part:

AMy absolute favorite part is making stuff that other people get to enjoy.

Whenever I get a DM from someone who is still stoked on their stickers I made like five years ago I am so honored! That is the coolest feeling ever.

Least favorite part is the struggle to stay focused and confident in what I do, especially when the hard times come.

It’s not always that easy running my own business, sometimes I make stuff that doesn’t sell and end up losing a bit of coin…which can really dampen your spirits if you’re not careful.

DM- Where and how would you like to see yourself 10 years from now?

A- To be honest, I don’t make long term plans these days.

I try to just be flexible and go with the flow, but obviously I’d love to just be better at drawing and ten years wiser.

DM- You only have two days left, what would you do?

A- I’d just do everything I love. Like drive my van, hangout with my cats, skate, and have a big shindig with my family.

DM- Other interests apart from illustrating:

A- I love to read, spend as much time outside as possible, I collect cacti, play guitar, skate around, and I’m pretty big into my fitness training so I have stamina for long hikes and other outdoorsy stuff.

DM- Your best childhood memory:

A- DEMO DERBIES!!! Haha, but for real, good times.

DM- Your best quality and your worst defect:

A- I think my best quality is my love for animals. Man, I’ve almost gone broke donating all my funds to help causes for animals.

And my worst defect is my self sabotage. Yikes.

DM- A success and a failure:

A- Being sober for almost three years is a cool success.

And a failure… Well, I dunno. I like to think that with every “failure” I’ve learned something valuable, which then makes it more of a lesson than a failure.
